Good Morning Everyone:

I recently was asked by a bride if I had a back-up JP in place in case I become sick and can not perform the service. Though I am rarely sick, I thought this was a good question. I live in Bridgeport, CT but am officiating throughout the state. I would like to know what others are doing and make contact with other officiants who would be interested in networking for emergency coverage. Thank you for your thoughts and ideas.

Good question. I have a similar situation and in need of finding a back up in my area, for a wedding I was supposed to be doing in Ma. on July 17. My son informs me just a short time ago that HE is getting married that day at the same time so of course that's that. Now I have to find another JP for this couple

Great Question and it really does separate A PROFESSIONAL from a HOBBYIST!
A Professional will certainly take the role much more seriously and provide for various scenarios and emergency situations. Some couples will want this topic addressed in their contracts.
As a professional, it is our OBLIGATION to our couples to have a plan in place should an emergency prevent us from being able to provide intended (and contracted) service.

I always share with my couples that I am a member of the
Justice of the Peace Association of the U.S

Because of my affiliation with the Association, I have great contact with many other Justices and should there be an emergency, I have relationships with Justices throughout the state who would be able to provide services in case I can not.

I have also formed a close alliance with several other Justices who I know that I can count on to assist any time there is an emergency.
True, there is always a chance that they might be booked at the same time, but I am fairly certain that not ALL of them will be booked.
I carry their numbers in my cell phone and keep in touch with them by email, Facebook, Twitter and chatting throughout the year.
I have selected (as my "A" List) Justices whose styles, moral, ethics are more similar to my own.
I also have a "B List" of those who are local to the area in which I will be servicing and who may be able to step in for legalities...not my first choice for the type of service my couple anticipates, but someone who can step in and "save the Day" in case of emergency.

I know that I am on the list of several associates.
MAKE THOSE RELATIONSHIPS!!!

To be even more certain, my husband became a Justice of Peace in the last election (as did my daughter).

Back ups firmly in place.

Hello JP's..I have recently retired from full time employment and am available as back up for any JP's in central connecticut..Please add my phone no (860-828-6929) to your emerg contact list and I will do my best to assist you whenever possible. I have also been in that position 2 years ago and I know how hard it can be to find someone with short notice. Joe Casso (jpcasso@yahoo.com)

Great topic. Thank you. This would be a great topic for the next seminar.
Networking IS so important. Circumstances can always change.
We are professionals, but in CT each of us can set our own fees for service. I'd be interested in knowing how others have managed that part of the referral to another JP.
Thanks.
Everyone have a great day.
